How to Choose an Avebury Tour: Group Size, Stonehenge Entry and What's Included

Why the cheapest is not always the cheapest

Fares here run from $103 to $1,782, and that spread hides more than it shows. Eleven of the departures exclude the Stonehenge entrance fee and three include it, so the headline price and the day's real cost are different numbers on most of them.

How long do you actually get at Avebury?

This is the column that decides whether you enjoyed the day, and it is the one nobody sorts on. The range across these departures is enormous: four hours at the top and thirty minutes at the bottom, with no relationship to price at all.

An hour walks half the circle. Ninety minutes crosses the bank and does a quadrant properly. Two hours covers all four and the village. Thirty minutes is a photograph. Who pays for Stonehenge?

Almost every day here pairs Avebury with Stonehenge, and Stonehenge is ticketed while Avebury is free. Three departures include the admission in the fare. On the rest you buy it yourself, usually on arrival, which costs more than booking ahead.

That is not sharp practice: a private car for six cannot sensibly bundle six variable-priced timed tickets. But it means a $134 day with the ticket included can be cheaper in total than a $120 day without it, and the grid will never tell you that.

How big is the group?

Caps run from a private car of six to a coach of thirty, and the listings state it inconsistently. Some publish a maximum per tour; some publish a maximum per booking, which is a different number entirely. Where an operator does not state a cap, this site leaves the row out rather than guessing.

The practical bands: private cars take six to eight, small-group minibuses sixteen, and the London coach days twenty-five to thirty. On a site where the guide's commentary is most of what you are buying, that difference is audible.

What about the cancellation terms?

Most refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Two do not: the Bath private day with hotel pickup and the evening special-access day are both final sales that cannot be refunded or changed for any reason.

Both of those are good products and both say so plainly on their own listing. It simply means you fix the date before you pay, which on a monument that never closes is easier than it sounds — but check what the weather does in your month first.

Should you book a private tour?

Run the arithmetic rather than the instinct. A private car from Salisbury starts at $509 for up to six; a coach seat from London is $134 each. At two people the coach wins easily. At four it is close. At five or six the private car is level or cheaper, and you get the route, the pace and the pickup point.

The other reason to go private has nothing to do with money. Two operators put a working archaeologist in the car, two take a folding wheelchair, and one will meet you outside the pub inside the stone circle. None of that is available on a timetable.

Does the departure city matter?

More than anything except the hours. From Bath the road time is under an hour each way, so a nine-hour day is mostly stops. From London it is two hours each way, so a ten-hour day is six hours of content. From Salisbury or Glastonbury you are already close.

If you have a choice of base, taking the tour from Bath rather than London buys you roughly two hours of actual sightseeing for a lower fare. The trade is that the Bath days lean toward villages and the London days toward monuments.
