At Stonehenge you cannot get near the stones, and it looks much as it does in the photographs. Avebury is the opposite: the stones are spread out and you can walk up and touch them. It is also the lunch stop and the capacity is small, so eat before the coaches land.

The scale is the surprise
Almost nobody expects the circle to be bigger than Stonehenge, and several travellers say so directly. It is the most common single reaction, and it is why the time-at-the-stones column matters more here than at most attractions.

The comparison people draw themselves: at Stonehenge you stay on the path, at Avebury the stones are spread out and you walk up to them. That contrast does more selling than any description.
