What you are looking at

The unshaped blocks are sarsen, left scattered across the downs and raised broadly as they were found — the difference from Stonehenge's dressed and lintelled stones is visible in almost every frame. The squat concrete plinths mark stones that are gone, set there during the 1930s excavations and explained on the stones of Avebury.

Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow both sit within two miles of the village and both are free to visit, as set out on things to do at Avebury. Bath, Lacock, Castle Combe and Salisbury appear because most guided days pair the circle with one or more of them, and Avebury Tours sets out which does which.
